Sheepanigans Brand Story
Finding Inspiration in Every Turn from Fleece to Fibre
Goes way back when my parents bought 5 Soay sheep as pets. I would have loved to have them lamb but we didn’t have enough ground. Some many years later myself and my husband found ourselves owning a campsite. To help maintain the grounds we bought some Shetland Sheep; we liked their small size, their different colouring, that they make very good mother’s and their fleece is very soft.
I wanted to know what I could do with the fleeces; how I would process them to make into something useful – what is more I couldn’t bring myself to eat them; I just got too attached. I like lamb, I like the idea of eating your own produce, but I made the mistake of naming my sheep and watching them too much and sitting amongst them getting to know them individually.
I taught myself how to spin their fleeces on a spinning wheel my husband bought from a junk shop and up-cycled. I then joined the Narberth Spinners and Weavers Guild who taught me so much more and still do. We bought 5 sheep back in 2017 had 3 years of lambs and stayed with 10 Shetland Sheep and we adopted one Gotland who was looking for a home after losing her goat foster mum. All 11 do a great job mowing the fields but prefer the hedges and wild flowers so have to keep them off the meadow – they get it as hay later. Our sheep are very loveable, very intelligent, comical and have wills of their own.
My brand SHEEPANIGANS comes from the meaning of the word ‘shenanigans’ - spirited or mischievous activity. This describes my sheep to a ‘T’.
The Sheepanigan Flock have the fortune to live beside the magnificent St. Bride's Bay where they are entertain and are entertained by the visitors to our campsite.
